Perry County Unsung Heroes

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis a group of Perry County residents have continued to keep their regular work hours. They open their facilities. They deal with the customers. They stock their shelves. They complete their paperwork. And they lock up when finished for the day. Each facility serves about 200 to 300 customers per month.

One of these residents has their own truck. They average 2 to 5 trips to the warehouse a week to pick up close to 5,000 pound loads of inventory and deliver it to the various outlets around the county.

Who are these people? Where do they work?

Over 60 Perry County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers, aged 55 to 90, are the residents that keep many of the food pantries in Perry County open for business. Much of the food stocked at the food pantries comes from the Southeast Ohio Foodbank located in Logan, Ohio. AND, they are volunteers! As in working for free! Without the RSVP volunteers, most Perry County food pantries would not be able to open their doors

What else do the RSVP volunteers do?

Some make phone calls, not only to other volunteers, but also to disabled seniors around Perry County. The volunteers typically call the other seniors once a week to make sure they have everything they need and to make sure they are OK.

Some volunteers have been making facemasks that are donated to the community. To date over 450 facemasks have been donated, with many going to Perry EMA.
