JobsOhio Update and Economic Impact Memo from JP Nauseef | August 14, 2020

JobsOhio business and community stakeholders,

The coronavirus pandemic has exposed several gaps in our domestic medical supply chain, in particular personal protective equipment (PPE) including civilian use cotton face masks. This issue presented a unique opportunity for Ohio to once again emerge as a leader in rising to the challenges of the pandemic, but it would take an exercise in uncommon collaboration and teamwork to achieve results.

At some other time, Stitches USA, LLC of Sugarcreek and Buckeye Mask Company of Cleveland would have been competitors. However, these days we all have a common interest in eradicating this new virus once and for all and the two companies came together in a pandemic partnership to mass produce cotton masks. It’s another example of Ohio building on its legacy of innovation and productivity.

Thanks to JobsOhio and our partners’ contribution toward the purchase of advanced machinery for both Stitches USA, LLC and Buckeye Mask Company, Ohio and the U.S. can better compete with other nations in the manufacture of masks. In fact, at full capacity, Ohio’s combined production of over 1.5 million protective masks per month is directly competitive with Chinese facilities.

While the coronavirus numbers appear daunting, we’re proud to be a part of our state’s continued efforts to fight for the health and safety of all Ohioans while supporting our local businesses.
