A special message for Perry County CIC and invite for employee-seeking Perry County businesses:

Perry County OhioMeansJobs (OMJ) will be holding a training and job fair, the CCU Connections Expo, on Thursday, December 19, from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the Tecumseh Theater in Shawnee.  The Expo is targeted at all of the 200+ workers recently laid off by CCU Coal and Construction (the liquidators of the Buckingham mine and related sites in the region). These workers are eligible for a benefit of up to $20,000 over two years in tuition support for training for in-demand jobs.

Perry OMJ wants these workers to carefully consider reemployment strategies that utilize this training benefit.  We understand this competes with the desire to just get back to work, especially in a strong job market, but while these miners are dependable, capable workers, recovering the wages they earned in the coal industry will not likely happen unless they take the time now to invest in their training and skill development.  If you're an employer who depends on specialized training to meet workforce needs, however or whenever it takes place, pre-employment, after hours or on-the-job, and you are on the hunt for workers and funding to make it happen, please consider taking part in this Expo.

I can't say that the Expo will definitely deliver to you several immediate hires, though it could. Rather, it is our hope is that it could benefit you with finding an experienced, capable worker funded and committed to get the training needed to meet your unfilled mid-skill or higher positions. We'll have the leading training and credential providers of the region, Hocking, Tri-County, Mid-East among them, at the Expo in order to better connect job, skill and worker.

Because OhioMeansJobs can offer the spouses of dislocated workers the same $20,000 over two year benefit for in-demand job training, we are working hard to get them to the Expo as well. So, while I'm sharing below the job categories and counts from the original layoff notice, there will be potential employees at the Expo from many more categories than you might expect from a mining workforce.

If you'd like to take part in the CCU Connections Expo, or to learn more about it, please contact me or Angela Mccord of Perry County OhioMeansJobs. I am at 614.783.0309, or at either or in reply to this email, and Angela can be reached at or (740) 721-0676 to hold your spot in this Fair.
