ATTENTION RESCUE GROUPS: Due to budget factors this shelter will not return phone calls outside of our (740) area code. If you are outside of our area code,  please contact our office DURING WORKING HOURS ONLY!! If you call after hours, this shelter will NOT return your call. We recommend you contact us by E~Mail for any out of our area requests. The prices of our dogs are $30.00 plus license fee and shot fee.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE: Visit our shelter and find the pet that best suits your needs and desires. If that pet is legally for sale, the dog can then be adopted. We do NOT hold dogs for anyone. The dogs are on a first come first serve basis. You must present your photo I.D. at the front desk, answer a few questions, sign a few forms, and pay the required fees. Your new best friend is ready to go home with you.  All dogs that are purchased at our shelter appear healthy. However, it is recommended you take your animal to your Vet as soon as it leaves the shelter. This shelter provides no guarantee or fitness for purpose. We do not grant any refund of any kind.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I license my dog?

All dogs over four months of age must be licensed each year between December 1 and January 31. If you bring your dog into Ohio after January 31, the Dog Warden will honor the new license from the previous place of residence until tags are due in next calendar year. If you obtain your dog after January 31, you are required to purchase the license within 30 days. Ohio Revised Code Section 955.01.

Where do I purchase a dog license?

Dog tags may be issued only by the County Auditor; however, there are several locations throughout the county where regular dog license can be purchased during the annual sale period of Dec 1 to Jan 31. After the annual sale period, regular dog tags may only be purchased from the County Auditor's Office and the Perry County Dog Shelter.

Why do I need to license my dog?

Licensing is a requirement of state law. However there is one other exceptionally good reason for licensing your dog. If your animal is missing, the dog warden can quickly notify you your pet has been found. That way you can quickly claim him. Section 955.12 of the Ohio Revised Code allows the county to hold a licensed dog for up to 14 days, after mailing a notice of its capture to the owner, before allowing it to be either sold or destroyed. If a dog is unlicensed, the Law allows it to be either destroyed or sold after only 3 days. Our County Dog Warden, Matt Everett, does list the dogs on for dogs that do not have a tag.

How does it work?

Simply fill out the brief registration form and pay the annual fee per dog or kennel. Each dog receives a distinctive tag number (dog kennels receive five consecutively numbered tags). Once your dog has been assigned a license, the license number and the information about him is permanently filed in the county's records.

What about Service Dogs?

Service dogs (guide, leader and support animals) must also be licensed, but their fee is waived. Once they are registered with the county, they are permanently licensed by receiving a special tag.

What if the tag becomes lost?

Simply provide your County Auditor with proof of its loss and a duplicate tag will be issued for $5.00.

What if the dog changes owners?

The new owner is required to record the ownership change with the County Auditor. They must present a transfer of ownership certificate, signed by the former owner, and pay the $1.00 fee.
