SOPEC Continues to Provide Savings for Southeast Ohio Member Communities’ Electric Aggregation Programs Compared to the Standard Service Offer This Supply Year While Also Featuring 100% Renewable Energy

The Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (“SOPEC”), a regional council of governments with 28 member communities and political subdivisions, is proud to announce that for the 2023 supply year, all eligible residents and small businesses within its member communities’ electric aggregation programs will receive 100% renewable energy while also estimated to save money on their electricity supply charges compared to local utility standard service offers (“SSO”). That means millions in savings in the aggregate and hundreds in savings per household, all while featuring 100% renewable energy.

SOPEC member communities in Southeast Ohio in AEP Ohio service territory are estimated to save 12% compared to the AEP Ohio SSO rate, while featuring 100% renewable energy. The average Southeast Ohio customer is estimated to save $135 over the next 12-month period which began on June 1, 2023, compared to the AEP Ohio SSO rate, which adds up to an estimated $2.5 million in total combined savings across its Southeast Ohio communities.

Even the City of Athens, which has the first carbon fee in the country voluntarily added to its rate, is estimated to save 10% compared to the AEP Ohio SSO rate, while featuring 100% renewable energy. The Athens carbon fee creates a fund for solar development on public buildings in the City of Athens and passed via ballot measure with 76% of the vote in 2018.

Rates from June 1, 2023 through May 31, 2024:

SOPEC member communities in Southeast Ohio (AEP Ohio territory)

● AEP Ohio SSO rate (expected to vary slightly throughout year): 11.20 cents per kWh

●SOPEC Southeast Ohio Electric Aggregation Program rate: 9.857 cents per kWh

●SOPEC City of Athens Electric Aggregation Program rate (with Carbon Fee): 10.057 cents per kWh
